The Shadow Mouth

portrait-rb_edited.jpg

This painting of bodies, how can we paint it now?

April 5, 1994: rainy day. Above all, do not work today. You would plunge into color. Reserve black for light, and stillness for gesture, and gesture for the quest for forms. Lost. Keep the heavy for light, and let it weigh with all the absence of flesh touched… But by whom?

Far behind, I still imagine, beyond the debris of the intimate, the remains of centuries when truth stood at the center of the picture. Nostalgia?

Two panels are joined at the edge as if, from that center, I was still waiting for the mouth of shadow to open – or suffer? – and close.
